Tony Randerson had been a Labour councillor in North Yorkshire for 10 years and a Labour member for over 30 years.
He was dismayed at the direction Keir Starmer was taking the party and decided he couldn’t represent Labour any more. So he resigned from the party and stood down as a councillor.
He was then persuaded to stand as a Social Justice Party candidate in the subsequent by-election.
And, despite a dirty campaign from Labour attacking Tony personally, he won a resounding victory.
