Haia Mohammed wrote poetry to survive displacement and bombing in Gaza. At one point, believing she might not survive the night, she asked friends in London to publish her words as a witness.
After surviving that horrific night and her book being published, Haia won a scholarship to study creative writing at Goldsmiths, but she still didn’t believe she could actually leave Gaza.
She faced an impossible journey. Gaza’s borders were closed and the biometric centre had been bombed. She joined scholarship students campaigning to reach the UK and spoke on the BBC.
Eventually a way was found – travelling through an Israeli-controlled crossing to Jordan – where she completed her biometrics, received her visa and continued to London. And Goldsmiths.
Now Haia’s sister Amira has a place at Goldsmiths to study psychology.
The university can cover her visa and evacuation if her tuition is funded in full.
